Siesta, the great Spanish invention

There’s no better season for siestas than the summer. Among other reasons, it’s because there’s nothing stopping us from giving in to that delicious drowsiness that spreads over us after lunch. If you don’t want to fight the sleepiness, read this post about the best spots in Ibiza to take a nap and our tips to enjoy a simply perfect siesta.

the best beach bars in ibiza where you can have a siesta

It’s true that any old sun lounger with a parasol instantly becomes a temptation to abandon your body after a filling meal by the sea, but there are certain beach bars where resisting the temptation becomes far harder. Some examples are:

  • Sa Caleta: next to Es Bol Nou beach has a semi-hidden garden surrounded by junipers and pine trees. The best possible spot to take shelter from the midday heat.
  • Es Torrent: this well-known beach restaurant specialises in fish and shellfish and allows its customers to move over to the restaurant’s hammocks as soon as the drowsiness begins to creep up. It’s in Cala Es Torrent, a small cove with pebbles.

  • Ses Boques: another remote beach bar that is in the area of Es Cubells, a small beach known as Ses Boques. In the shade of the pine trees, its sun loungers are tremendously tempting for a typical Spanish siesta.
  • Cala Gracioneta: the beach bar next to our hotel is in the cove that shares its name and offers customers the chance to relax after lunch on the sun loungers by the restaurant.

QUIET BEACHES TO HAVE a siesta

There are few pleasures as summery as relishing a delicious meal and then having a refreshing nap on the beach. If you’re looking for a quiet beach in the shade for your siesta, we suggest you go to the beaches on the eastern coast where you will find several quiet coves that don’t have a beach bar, such as Cala Boix, Cala Mastella, Cala d’en Serra, Aigües Blanques and Des Figueral beach. Due to their position and as some of them are protected by the cliffs, they all start to be in the shade as the afternoon begins.

if you're planning to have a siesta, you should know that...

  • a siesta should never be longer than half an hour as, according to the American National Sleep Foundation, a longer nap would leave you dazed and will interfere with your sleep pattern at night.
  • is a cultural custom linked to the warm summer temperatures that peak in the early afternoon.
  • we must not insist on having a siesta or avoiding it. If your eyes droop, don’t fight it.
