Challenges to get 2018 off to a good start

It’s true that luck is not as much about chance as about your choices, but it can’t hurt to give luck a little push. That is why we suggest you welcome the New Year 2018 with one of these customs that are so popular in other parts of the world.

Eat a plate of lentils at midnight

This Italian custom goes back to the Roman times when people would give each other a handful of lentils as a symbol of financial success. This custom takes place after midnight and tradition says that the more you eat the better.

Crash plates

The Danish welcome the New Year making a racket as they lure luck by crashing the plates used at the New Year Eve’s dinner. Also, they literally leap into the New Year when the clock strikes midnight by jumping off a chair.

Wear red underwear

No-one really knows where the idea of wearing red underwear on the last day of the year came from, but it’s become widely spread. And it has an advantage: it is fully compatible with all other New Year rituals. Don’t forget it if you want an extra dose of good luck and best wishes. If you want to grab all the fortune you can get, add polka dots to your clothes. This Philippine custom associates dots with coins because of their round shape.

Get your case out

In Colombia, cases await the New Year by the door as they traditionally welcome the year by walking around the house or block with an empty case. With this, they are wishing for a New Year full of travels and success. If you’re thinking about coming to Ibiza in 2018, add this custom to your usual rituals and visit us very soon :-)

Or, once again, eat your lucky grapes

If you’re a bit superstitious, it’s best to stick to your ritual and eat 12 grapes, one for each chime at midnight. And if this is your first New Year in Ibiza, join this particular Spanish custom that started with an especially generous crop of grapes in 1909. If you wish to join this tradition, remember that Hostal La Torre offers a special New Year’s Eve dinner that already includes lucky grapes. What a great way to start 2018, right?
