What are San Antonio’s beaches like?

People who haven’t yet visited the western coast of Ibiza often wonder if the beaches of San Antonio (Sant Antoni de Portmany) are worth visiting. And the answer to this is yes, because this coastline may be quite short, but it’s stunning. From urban beaches to wild coves, this town on the western coast boasts some of the most attractive beaches and coves in Ibiza.

What is San Antonio coast like?

S’Arenal

S’Arenal is probably the best known beach in San Antonio because it’s right in the centre of the bay, by the promenade and inside the town. It is a wide, comfortable beach that doesn’t get too crowded and has everything within reach: services, strolls, bars and a great vibe. Shielded by the bay, its waters are usually calm and shallow, which makes it a great choice for families with kids. It also has a wide range of services, from sun loungers and water sports to restaurants and cafés only a few metres from the shore.

Es Pouet

Es Pouet is on the southern end of the San Antonio promenade. Its name refers to the old small well (pouet) that remains there. Given its shallow waters, this is a calm beach that has the added benefit of all lots of places to eat nearby, like the Es Puetó beach bar, which is staple of summers in San Antonio. Es Puetó is inside the bay, so it usually offers the right conditions to swim as well as a lovely view of the port, town and sunset. It has sun loungers to hire too.

Caló des Moro

If you head northwest along the promenade, you’ll get to the other end and Caló des Moro. Here you’ll find a small cove that is popular among the locals and surrounded by bar terraces and restaurants. If you go in the afternoon, you get to swim and enjoy a fantastic view of the sunset. It’s quite small, but its calm waters and easy access make it an excellent choice for a swim or to simply relax by the sea.

Ses Coves Blanques

This small urban cove is by the promenade, between the seawall and the beginning of Ses Variades. With crystal-clear waters and a seabed that is part sandy, part rocky, this cove is popular among the locals and passers-by. It shares its name with the nearby lighthouse, which is no longer used as such but has been turned into a cultural space.

Cala Gració

Located on the outskirts of San Antonio, in a residential area with hotels and villas, this charming cove feels like a wild cove due to the pine woods that separate it from the urban area. Its seabed combines rocky and sandy areas, and is perfect for snorkelling. Here you can relax and eat Mediterranean food in the Pomelo Playa. beach bar. This cove is connected to the neighbouring Cala Gracioneta by a path along the outcrop that separates both beaches.

Cala Gracioneta

Cala Gracioneta may be smaller, but it beats Cala Gració in beauty as its seabed is of fine sand and its waters are even clearer. It’s usually quite lively during the summer and right on the beach you’ll find Cala Gracioneta, a restaurant where you can celebrate summer eating paella, fresh fish and other Mediterranean food.

Punta Galera

Not all beaches in Sant Antoni are sandy. Punta Galera is one of the best examples. This unique spot used to be a quarry for a sandstone called Marés. It is made up of a series of wide natural stone platforms that tilt gently down into the water. It’s not your typical beach, but the landscape is spectacular and it offers a privileged view of the Med. It’s especially loved by those who seek a peaceful place to sunbathe, admire the sunset or want to swim in deep, crystal-clear waters. Its natural, practically unbuilt character makes it one of the most authentic spots on the Sant Antoni coast.

Cala Salada AND Cala Saladeta

This set of coves make up one of the most beautiful spots on the San Antonio coastline. Surrounded by cliffs covered in pine trees, they offer a clear seabed and picturesque views. They’re neighbours but not the same. Each one has its own character shaped by the type of seabed. While Cala Salada has a more local and relaxed vibe around its restaurant, Cala Saladeta attracts more swimmers, especially young people. This is because Cala Salada has a rocky seabed while Cala Saladeta is covered in fine sand both in and out of the water. To get to it, you have to walk along a path that goes atop the cliff and starts at Cala Salada.
